May 31, 2005 New York – The American Jewish Committee and the European Union of Jewish Students have established a cooperative association to advance the interests of Jewish communities – and the rising generation of Jewish leadership – on both sides of the Atlantic.
“The relationship between the EUJS and AJC underscores the value and importance of Jewish student activism,” said Lionel Schreiber, president of the EUJS. “This agreement will empower Jewish students in their communities around the world.” The EUJS comprises 34 national student unions, with more than 175,000 members in Europe, the former Soviet Union and Turkey.
The agreement was signed at AJC’s Annual Meeting, held in Washington this month. Schreiber and David Nachfolger, executive director of the Brussels-based EUJS, participated in the meeting as well as in AJC’s International Leadership Conference, which followed the annual meeting. Some 20 European Jewish students took part in the five-day program.
“AJC recognizes the dedication and impact of today’s generation of European Jewish leaders, and in particular the advocacy and organizational skills of EUJS,” said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. “We have a profound stake in this new partnership with the representative body of European Jewish student organizations, as the Jewish people everywhere have a stake in reaching, listening to, inspiring and mobilizing our communities’ younger members.”
The agreement with the EUJS is the fifteenth such association AJC has forged in recent years. Others are with leading Jewish organizations in Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Morocco, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and Venezuela, as well as with the European Council of Jewish Communities. |
