A Christmas Wish for Religious Freedom

A Christmas Wish for Religious Freedom

  LISTEN to this week's commentary:

Christmas is this week.

For many, it’s a time of special joy.

But for some, it’s tougher.

For those serving in uniform overseas, the separation from loved ones can be especially difficult.

Our thoughts are with them. They’ve chosen to put themselves in harm’s way so that back home we can live in peace.

And for Christians who live as minorities in countries with religious persecution, it can be downright dangerous for them to worship openly.

We have something very special in America.

In my neighborhood, for example, we have many different churches, synagogues, and a church that offers space to Muslim worshippers every week.

In other words, we have religious freedom – and mutual respect among faith groups.

My wish at this time of year?

That one day the whole world will have the same religious freedom and mutual respect that we enjoy here.

Happy holidays to our Christian friends and neighbors.
