AJC Radio Message: Oil Dependence is U.S. Achilles Heel
by David Harris
Executive Director, AJC
LISTEN to this week's commentary:
What’s our country’s Achilles’ heel?
Our oil dependence.
Look where much of the oil is produced.
In countries that hate the U.S., threaten our allies, and suppress human rights.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Take Brazil. Thirty years ago, Brazil imported 85 percent of its petroleum needs. Today, it’s energy independent.
In contrast, thirty years ago, America imported one-third of our petroleum needs. Today, the figure is nearly double.
Or take China, which said this year it intends to become the world’s leader in electric cars and buses.
Or take Europe, where clean-diesel cars can get up to 70 miles per gallon. And no, they’re not sardine cans, either.
If we don’t get serious, we’re going to be left behind.
For the sake of our national security, economy, and environment, we need an ambitious energy policy – now.
Let’s get moving, America.
