This week, the British Foreign Office, together with an international parliamentary coalition, sponsored a major global gathering.
The topic was anti-Semitism.
The good news?
Leading officials from around the world convened to discuss how to deal with the problem. It was an impressive turnout. AJC was privileged to participate.
The bad news?
That there’s need today for such a gathering. But there is.
There have been increasing attacks on synagogues, physical threats against Jews, Holocaust denial, ugly books spouting bizarre theories, and more in too many places.
The London Conference is a recognition of the magnitude of the problem. It’s also a strong message of the will to stand up, speak out, and fight back.
History has taught us that anti-Semitism may begin by targeting Jews, but never ends there.
Anti-Semitism, like all forms of hatred, is, at its root, an assault on human dignity and decency. That’s why we should all be in this struggle together.
This is David Harris of the American Jewish Committee.
