These are tough times for energy consumers.
Prices are through the roof. Petrodollars are flowing to oil–producing nations, some hostile to our interests.
Many importing countries are mobilizing.
Germany is investing massively in renewable energy. So is Sweden, which promises to exit oil by 2020. Brazil is focusing on increasing non-oil fuels. Israel is moving toward electric cars.
We’ve been slower to react. For too long, we thought we could have it all.
We could have cheap and limitless fuel.
We could drive gas guzzlers and ignore public transportation,
We could boil our houses in winter and freeze them in summer.
We’re now in an election season. Ask the presidential and congressional candidates what they’ll do about the energy challenge. And don’t be satisfied with pat answers.
We need a national plan. We have the capability. What we need is the will. And each of us can play a part.
