I’m in Israel this week. Date: 5/13/2008
Thousands have gathered, including many world leaders. It’s Israel’s 60th birthday bash.
Sure, Israel lives in a rough-and-tumble region.
Gaza is in the hands of the terrorist group Hamas.
Lebanon is again in turmoil. Hezbollah terrorist forces are at work.
And Iran looms large. Its nuclear program goes forward. Its links with Syria, Hamas, and Hezbollah are yielding dividends.
But the mood in Israel is nonetheless celebratory.
Israel, after all, is a miracle.
For more than 3,000 years, the Jewish people have been linked to this ancient land. And for the past 60 years, modern Israel hasn’t just survived, but bloomed.
When you use your cell phone or computer, Israeli technology probably went into it. So, too, the MRI equipment that could help save your life. And for millions in Africa and Asia, Israeli technology is producing food and building lives.
Happy birthday, Israel.
