Celebrating Freedom on Election Day

AJC national radio message

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

Once again, the American people have spoken.

As always, Election Day brought exhilaration to some, disappointment to others.

That’s the inherent nature of electoral politics.

But, in the end, the biggest winner of all is neither a particular candidate nor party.

Rather, it’s all of us who are blessed to live in a flourishing democracy.

Here, the ballot, not the bullet, rules.

Here, the losing candidates concede, the winners take office, and no one thinks twice about smooth transfers of power.

And here, we are, and shall always remain, one nation.

I come from a family which lived without democracy.

My mother suffered, first, under communism, then, later, under Nazism.

My late father experienced Nazi tyranny.

And my wife endured the dictatorship of an Arab strongman.

For us, there’s nothing more precious than the gift of freedom.

And there’s no better celebration of that freedom than Election Day.

God bless America!
