The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

Thank You to U.S. Armed Forces

To all the men and women who devote their lives to defending the United States around the world:

I’d like to say thank you for what you do, for the risks you take, and for the results you achieve.

Sometimes in the public eye, sometimes far from it, you confront a merciless enemy that celebrated 9/11 and that wants to wreak more human havoc.

You’re determined to ensure these extremists don’t succeed.

You face many obstacles in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, and other turbulent places, but remain undaunted.

Just the other day, you got Anwar al-Awlaki, whom President Obama described as “the leader of external operations for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”

And, in the same strike, you got Samir Khan, another Al Qaeda operative who declared himself “proud to be a traitor to America.”

So, to you who defend us day in and day out, please accept the thanks of this grateful American.
