|As adopted by the National Immigration Task Force on September 11, 2012
Because lawful immigration status is irrelevant to being a safe driver, and our roads are
safer for everyone when every driver is required to pass a driving test and obtain a
license, and individuals with a valid driver’s license are more likely to carry car
insurance, AJC supports state legislation allowing all drivers to obtain and carry a valid
driver’s license without requiring proof of lawful immigration status.
Across the United States there are individuals without lawful status driving because it is
their only way of getting to work, school, and other places; for many people it is a
necessary part of daily living in today’s society. Therefore, it is in all of our interest if all
drivers, regardless of whether they are in lawful immigration status, pass a driving test
and obtain a driver’s license so that our roads are safer for everyone.
States should not require proof of lawful status or inquire into the immigration status of
an individual before granting a license. Any form of identification that conforms to
federal standards for security should be sufficient proof of identification. States should
take appropriate steps when granting licenses to ensure that our national security is not
compromised by the use of false documentation, but requiring documentation of
immigrant status is not necessary or appropriate for assuring security.
From its founding in 1906, AJC has been a strong voice in support of fair and generous
treatment of immigrants, participating actively in many of the major immigration debates
of our time, including our continuing strong support for immigration reforms.
