December 10, 2012 – New York – AJC Executive Director David Harris received tonight Azerbaijan’s highest award to a foreign citizen, the “Dostlug” Order of Friendship.
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev chose to honor Harris in recognition of his “contributions to the development of friendly ties between the peoples of Azerbaijan and United States.” Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the U.S., presented the award at a New York ceremony.
“I am moved to receive this prestigious honor from Azerbaijan,” said Harris. “It is a tribute to all those who recognize how vitally important this strategic relationship is. I do hope this award will further deepen understanding between our two countries and broaden the relationship to still more sectors of both nations.”
Harris last visited Baku in July. It was the third visit of an AJC delegation to Azerbaijan in recent years.
Harris has been honored by the governments of Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Spain, and Ukraine for his many international activities on behalf of the advancement of the transatlantic partnership and dedication to the Jewish people.
