Hold Hamas Accountable

Re: “Palestinians Deserve Justice” by Arnie Voigt

Mr. Voigt’s guest commentary article is a one-sided attack against Israel that ignores the cause for the current plight of people in Gaza. Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi correctly noted that the crisis in Gaza is “self-inflicted.” In 2006, Israel withdrew completely from Gaza. In 2007, Hamas, a terrorist organization, seized control of Gaza in a bloody coup against Palestinian Authority President Abbas. Since then, Hamas has attacked Israel by launching tens of thousands of rockets, causing both Egypt and Israel to impose a maritime blockade to prevent Hamas from acquiring sophisticated missiles and armaments.

Hamas pursues this militant course because it seeks to destroy Israel. The opening paragraph of its Charter states: “Israel will rise and will remain erect until Islam eliminates it as it had eliminated its predecessors.” Article 13 provides: “There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. The [peace] initiatives, proposals and International Conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.”

That same notorious Hamas Charter declares in Article 31 that Christian and Jews must subordinate to Islam. One would think such declaration would concern a Lutheran pastor like Mr. Voigt and others who refuse to hold Hamas to account for causing the suffering of the people it now rules. Fortunately, the U. S. government “gets it.”

On June 9, State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley said: “We have offered Hamas a spot at the table many, many times if Hamas will agree to very straightforward conditions – recognize Israel, recognize existing agreements and give up violence against Israel. Those are not complex demands. … But because Hamas chooses, rather than serving the needs of its people, to fire rockets at Israel, that’s the reason why you have the current situation in Gaza.”

Amen!
