How eager is Israel for peace?

This week’s telling story says it all.

Israel is releasing 26 Palestinian prisoners convicted of murder and attempted murder, including of children and Holocaust survivors.

Another 78 are to be released in the coming months.

It’s the price the Israeli government is reluctantly willing to pay – and not even for a peace deal, but simply for getting talks restarted with the Palestinians.

The overwhelming majority of Israelis – up to 90 percent – think the price is much too high, but the government is going ahead anyway to show its good-faith commitment.

Now imagine if such a release of prisoners with blood on their hands took place in America.

Actually, it would be pretty hard to imagine, right? In fact, there’d be little chance, I’d say.

If this doesn’t show how deep Israel’s yearning for peace is, and the lengths to which it’ll go for the sake of peace, I don’t know what will.
