We celebrate Thanksgiving today.
It's a wonderful holiday--a day for parades, family gatherings, football, and
And a day, we shouldn't forget, for giving thanks.
The Pilgrims originated the holiday in 1621. They drew their inspiration from
the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, when Jews give thanks for the bounty we enjoy.
After 9/11, at AJC, we felt that Thanksgiving was the perfect time not only for
all Americans to express gratitude for that bounty, but also to emphasize the
special blessing of America−and the ties that bind us.
Together with several partners, we created America's Table: a Thanksgiving
Reader. It highlights our diverse roots and shared values as Americans.
In just a few pages, we seek to capture the unique story of America and the
richness of our nation's mosaic.
