It was years in the making, but America, increasingly dependent on oil, is slowly coming to its senses.

Tragically, it required the destruction wrought by two hurricanes, as oil prices skyrocketed and supplies declined.

And it needed the wake-up call of 9/11 and the realization that our petrodollars were going to those who teach and preach hatred of us.

But judging from comments by elected officials and auto industry leaders, there’s a growing awareness that it’s high time to come to grips with the energy question. And in America, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

There’s much to be done, but the first thing ought to be increasing fuel economy standards for cars and trucks. The technology is there. What’s been missing is political vision and courage from Washington.

True, we have red states and blue states. But enhancing our national security by reducing our need for imported oil ought to be a red, white, and blue issue—uniting us all.
