Improving America's Energy Policy

July 29, 2002

Here's my dream speech from Washington:

My fellow Americans,

The tragedy of 9/11 revealed three things:

First, there are those who seek our destruction. We've now taken the battle to them and victory shall be ours. God bless those Americans serving on the front lines.

Second, our intelligence services fell short, but we are taking steps to get it right.

And third, our national independence is compromised by our energy dependence. It's time to change that, too.

We need to reduce our reliance on unfriendly oil suppliers. We can save energy by raising fuel economy standards for all vehicles. And we must step up research on alternative energy sources.

I ask everyone – from elected officials to industry to the private citizen – to help enact a new energy policy.

If we succeed – and we can, America will be more secure.
