Energy Security Strengthens National Security

There’s been lots of talk lately about energy issues. Tragically, much of it misses the point.

Our country is dangerously dependent on foreign oil, a great deal of it from countries that aren’t our friends.

You’d think that after 9/11 we’d finally begin to fix the problem. Think again. Nothing has been done.

Rather than raising fuel economy standards for cars and trucks, Congress has balked.

Raising those standards would mean less fuel consumption, therefore reduced oil imports.

Instead, we’re at a 22-year-low in fuel economy standards. That makes no sense.

Energy independence strengthens national independence. Energy security strengthens national security.

We need leaders on both sides of the aisle in Washington to do what’s right. Our elected officials ought to hear from us. Tell them it’s high time to deal with the fuel economy issue.

It’s one way of saying that we Americans, after 9/11, are all in this together and want to do our share. It’s one way of making America stronger.

This is David Harris of the American Jewish Committee.
