Energy Independence Enhances National Security

There are some things I just don’t get.

For example, while American troops are putting their lives on the line in Iraq and Afghanistan, here at home we’re too often disengaged.

What can we do to help?

For one thing, we ought to be telling our elected officials that our nation must cut its dependence on Middle East oil, and that we’re ready to do our part.

The situation is surreal.

We buy oil from countries that have supported terrorism, spread radical religious teachings, suppressed women’s rights, and persecuted other faiths.

Meanwhile, our fuel economy standards are at a 22-year low.

Isn’t it high time for our elected officials to put partisanship aside and agree on a three-part initiative?

First, raise fuel economy standards for cars and trucks, and fast. Second,  step up research into the new technologies that can one day replace fossil fuels. And third, call on all Americans to reduce our use of gas.

Remember: Greater energy independence means greater national security.
