Albert Einstein famously defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

That's been our nation's energy policy for two decades.

As dependence on Middle East oil grows, fuel economy standards are at a 22-year low and our appetite for gas guzzlers increases.

Our policy endangers America's national security big time.

We've become dependent on nations that aren't necessarily our friends.

And our petrodollars too often fund those who preach, teach, or practice hatred toward us.

In short, this is insanity.

And even after the tumultuous events of recent years, too many lawmakers still act as if everything will be just fine.

They need to hear from constituents.

Tell them we want more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, we support serious research into alternative energy sources, and we believe in energy conservation.

And tell them the time to act is now. Our country's future depends on it.

This is David Harris of the American Jewish Committee.
