President John Kennedy famously said: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Sometimes we take our good fortune for granted. We shouldn't.

Many Americans are putting their lives on the line for our country, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. We owe them a lot, and they should always be in our thoughts and prayers.

But is there something the rest of us can do? The answer is yes.

We can also help strengthen our national security. How?

By getting in touch with our elected officials and telling them that we need to cut our dependence on imported oil now. This should be an issue that unites Democrats and Republicans alike.

And we can also make informed decisions about our own vehicles and homes that decrease the use of imported oil.

Let's be clear. As long as we're reliant on oil from nations that are not our friends, we endanger our national security.

It's time to heed President Kennedy's words and think about what we can do for our country.

This is David Harris of the American Jewish Committee.
