Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct program development activities to support new or expanded organizational initiatives and projects (as approved by the Board of Governors, Executive Committee, Executive Director, National Director of Development, or other senior professionals).
    • work with AJC program staff to develop plans for expansion of programs or  development of new programs which reflect  goals of the organization;
    • meet with program or departmental personnel, as needed; and, 
    •  assure that initiatives developed could be attractive to potential funders.
  2. Perform content research for development of grant proposals, Letters of Intent, correspondence, and papers.
    • compile statistics, demographics or other information as necessary; 
    • understand the issues of importance to the AJC agenda and describe cogently  the AJC perspective; and, 
    •  obtain Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from private foundations and  government agencies and assess appropriateness for submitting proposals.
  3. Research alternative funding sources.
    • identify potential funders whose giving priorities mesh with the specific  programs or projects AJC wishes to create or enhance;
    • attain relevant information on the potential funder such as Annual  Reports, history of giving to AJC, and funding guidelines; and,
    • assess potential to attract support.
  4. Write grant applications and proposals.
    • responsible for the preparation of grant applications including budget  documents, program descriptions, and all other supporting documentation, as  required;
    • assure materials are prepared and submitted in a timely fashion;
    • assure confidentiality of activities undertaken; and,
    • attend meetings, as necessary.
  5. Contact potential funders.
    • contact funders to acquire RFPs, Annual Reports, giving guidelines or other  relevant information;
    • prepare written correspondence to potential funders, introducing them to the  American Jewish Committee and department activities;
    • escort potential funders on site visits to meet with department staff, as  appropriate; 
    • follow up with potential funders regarding status of pending applications;
    • acknowledge donations and grants received;
    • prepare reports to funders;
    • conduct grant administration assignments; and,
    • cultivate relationship with donor.
  6. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Public Policy, Humanities, or related field. Masters degree preferred.
  2. Exceptional written and oral communications skills.
  3. Proven experience writing government and/or foundation grant proposals.
  4. Ability to manage several assignments concurrently.
  5. Experience using the internet to attain information about foundations and other potential funders.
  6. Excellent word processing skills.
  7. Ability to work well with others under time pressure.
